What Do You Know About the Wood in Your Fence?
Not all wood is created equally. What wood might work well in colder climates may not be able to sustain itself from a barrage of constant sunlight. In Florida, a Pressure Treated Southern Pine is the most resilient in prolonged rain and heat. Cypress is a very reliable and durable wood as well, but it mostly is shipped from the North and might cost quite a bit more.
Here are some things to watch out for if you aren’t careful about which kind of wood you’re selecting:
- Some wood is mixed with plastic. Stick with vinyl if you like the idea of a plastic fence.
- Pre-fabricated wooden fences are prone to damage and regular repairs. It is still considered pre-fab if any of the sections of the fence aren’t constructed on-site.
- Avoid wood from other countries if you can. Many home improvement stores purchase their wood from distributors whom import.
Making sure you select the best possible wood for your fencing project will maintain longevity and superior condition for 10, 15, or even 20 years.
