Wood Fencing is Not All The Same

Published by admin under Uncategorized

If you have ever wondered why some wood privacy fencing seems to stay beautiful and last a long time, while others seem to warp, twist, split and fade all within it’s first year of installation, you are not alone. Many homeowners call us every year complaining that the wood fence they purchased at their local “do it yourself ” store last year now looks terrible and needs to be replaced.

The problem with purchasing your wood fencing at one of those places is the way the fence is manufactured and the actual wood used to make the fence. Fencing sold in retail outlets is most often made from low quality very thin wood and it is almost always prefabricated.

Most damage to wood fencing occurs in the first six months to a year. The culprit is the afternoon thunder storms and Orlando has about 7 or 8 months out of the year where it rains just about every afternoon. Thin wet wood and rusty hardware is the perfect concoction for warped and cracked fencing.

Like all damp wood, when it dries it will shrink. The rusty nails or staples will not hold the wood tightly enough in place, therefore allowing the wood to go any which way that it can. Likewise, wood that is too thin will split once it dries.

Prefabricated fencing is put together with thin wood, staples or tack nails. A quality, custom fence has pickets 3/4 of an inch thicker than prefab fence and is put together with double galvanized yellow tip ring shank nails.  If you’re not familiar with a ring shank nail, it’s a nail that has 50 reversed ovular looking rings that acts like a screw when it punctures the wood.

To sum everything up, be very cautious when purchasing a privacy fence from and home improvement store. Look how it’s made. Do you see staples? Are the pickets only 1/4 of an inch thick? If you insist on purchasing the fencing from the home improvement store than be prepared to possibly having to replace it in 3-4 years. If you choose to spend a little bit more money and hire a custom wood fencing company be prepared to have your fence last 15-20 years. That’s right, with proper materials, professional installation and a good oil based sealer, your custom wood fence can last 15 to 20 years.

As always, if you choose to hire a professional fencing company to build and install your wood privacy fence, make sure they are licensed, insured and legit.

The good news is at Paramount Fencing each fence is a custom built fence with a handcrafted touch, built to last, and affordable. Every fence is assembled piece by piece on-site to ensure a crafted look that blends into the contour of your landscape. What is Virgin Vinyl?

Published by admin under Uncategorized

When you first set out on your “having a  PVC (polyvinyl chloride) fence installed” journey, you will most likely hear many unfamiliar and confusing terms. It is important for you as the consumer to understand what your fence contractor is saying so you can avoid buying fencing that is not of the highest quality.

Educating yourself on the fence materials used, can only protect you from getting ripped off. When purchasing a PVC fence in Florida, you want to make sure it is made from “virgin Vinyl”.  Simply put, virgin vinyl means it is made from the purest materials. No waste or “regrind” material has been used to make the PVC fence.

Why is this important? Using virgin PVC means that the resilience, impact resistance, and UV inhibitors are at their full potential. In Florida, virgin vinyl fencing is important because the extreme heat and sunshine will cause a fence of lesser quality to turn yellow and become brittle.

As a buyer, educate yourself on the fencing you will be purchasing. Know what the industry terms mean and what your PVC fence is made of. Lastly, it’s not always easy to recognize the different types of PVC so be sure to ask a lot of questions. This little bit of knowledge can save you hundreds of dollars.

Pool Fence Maintenance Tip

Published by admin under Uncategorized

If your pool fence is aluminum, there will be less maintenance than other types of fencing because it is resistant to corrosion from soil, water, and lawn chemicals. If you live in a coastal area it’s a good idea to wash your aluminum pool fencing regularly. Hosing them down once every few weeks will remove any salt build up that may over time corrode parts of your fence.

It is always a good idea to check your pool fencing often to make sure all gates and latches are in good working order and there are no other broken or loose parts.

Property Line Set Back Rules for Fence Installation

Published by admin under Uncategorized

We wanted to share with you a common question we hear from our customers.

Frank in Orlando asked this fence question;

“I have an existing chain link fence on my property, I’m thinking of having it replaced with PVC fencing. The old fence was installed about a foot in on my property line which I never understood, when I put my new fence up can I go right to the property line or is there any setbacks I need to watch for?”

To answer Frank’s question; it depends on the area you live in. Set back rules and zoning laws for installing a fence in Orlando can vary greatly with Oviedo or Lake Mary’s fence set back rules.

To avoid any added expense you should call your city and/or county of origin and ask for the rules for installing a fence before you get started. As always, make sure to use a licensed and insured fencing company to install your fence.

Backyard Focal Point

Published by admin under Uncategorized

At this point you should have a good idea of what type of fencing you will use to provide the privacy you need. When designing your backyard get away, consider what the focal point will be. Gazebos, arbors or fountains make great focal points. I have seen outdoor fire places or even plants used as the center piece of a backyard.

If you chose to use an arbor, there are at least three types:

  1. Entry point arbors - placed at the entry to your yard
  2. Destination arbors - gives you or your guests a place to go visit in your yard. Especially if you add a bench.
  3. Focal point arbors - used as the main attraction of your yard.

Whichever you chose, once you have the focal point planned out you can design the rest of your landscaping and entertaining areas around it.

Paramount Fence can help with custom arbors and gates throughout the Orlando area. Call…. (407) 341 2720

Backyards and Spring

Published by admin under Uncategorized

Springtime is the land awakening.  The March winds are the morning yawn.  ~Quoted by Lewis Grizzard in Kathy Sue Loudermilk, I Love You

I love this time of year! There is a Hong Kong Orchid tree in my yard that starts blooming in Spring. It is just packed full of beautiful purple blooms and the best part is the Humming Birds that come every morning and evening to feed! They are very territorial and will chase and dive bomb each other- it is quite a show! At the end of a stressful day it is so nice to retreat to my yard and enjoy watching the entertainment that nature provides me.

Spring is around the corner and some of you may be thinking about making some changes to your backyard. It doesn’t take much to turn your backyard into a mini sanctuary or a focal point for entertaining guests. In Orlando, we can appreciate the February through June months for outside activities. It is not as humid and the bugs are not out in full force yet.

Over the next few weeks we will share ideas to help with your backyard transformation projects.

For today, privacy is a good place to start. Nothing like trying to squeeze in some “me time” when that nosy neighbor just barges over and wants to catch you up on all the neighborhood gossip. Start thinking privacy fence. You can completely close in your backyard with Wood or PVC Fencing or maybe just one side. You could also just close in a patio area.

Can Your Dog Jump the Fence.

Published by admin under Uncategorized

Some dogs are just not happy in the huge fenced in yard you have provided them. There are always those dogs that think the grass is greener on the other side. When a dog successfully jumps the fence and escapes he/she views this as an rewarding accomplishment. Rewarding in that on the other side, he has your neighbors cat to chase or other people to play with. Because the dog usually has a great time on the “other side” this behavior can be hard to stop. Here are some helpful tips in stopping your beloved fence jumper cold:

  • Obviously if your dog can jump your fence it may not be tall enough. Consider a taller fence or adding fence extensions.
  • If your wood fence is in bad repair you can replace damaged boards. Fix all holes and week spots in any chain link, aluminum, or PVC fencing.
  • If your dog digs, you can sink patio stones or bricks into the ground around the bottom of your fence. Or, bury chicken wire a foot or so into the ground around your fence.
  • Now for the fun stuff, Fido needs to get a running start to clear taller fences. Planting hedges around the fence will throw off his leaping point, thus, preventing an successful run and leap sequence. Ha ha!
  • Another alternative is to erect a smaller fenced in area with-in your existing fenced yard. Use at least a 6-10ft high structure by 5-10 ft wide.
  • Lastly, try not to leave your escape artist alone in the yard. You want his yard time to be monitored because he may find different ways to escape. He knows your watching and he will love all the extra attention he gets outside. Eventually, he may not have the desire to go looking for attention or things to do outside the fenced yard because he will have you.

Cleaning Your Vinyl Fence

Published by admin under Uncategorized

Spring cleaning time is around the corner. If you intend to add your vinyl fence to your “to do” list, we have compiled a few pointers in keeping your fence looking it’s best throughout the year.

Items Needed:

  • garden hose
  • household cleaner/dish soap
  • rags
  • soft bristle brush
  • small amount of bleach for tough stains

1) For regular dirt and debris simply use 1/2 cup of any common household cleaner per gallon of water. You can spray your fence down with the hose and use the rag and solution to remove any stains. This step should remove the majority of dust and mud that may be present on the PVC-vinyl fencing.

2) Living in humid Orlando Florida, you may have noticed mildew on your vinyl fencing. A light bleach solution can be used to erase this issue. I add 1/4 cup of bleach to a regular sized spray bottle. Next, fill the bottle with water and spray the  mildew. Let it sit for a few minutes then wipe with a wet rag or use a very soft bristled brush until stains are gone. Hose the fence down again to remove any traces of detergent or bleach.

3) For an easier option you can use any car washing hose attachment. These work great because the cleaning solution is automatically dispersed with the water and they usually have a long handle which , if you have a bad back,  eliminates any bending or over extending.

Preserving your wood fence

Published by admin under Uncategorized

If you have just installed or installing a new wood fence in the Orlando area, you will want to look at perserving it.  With our dramatic climate changes, the wood fence can deteriorate alot faster than usual. The way to preserve your wood fence is to apply a sealant to the wood.

There are two different kinds of sealant: Acrylic based or Oil based.  Acrylic based is a water based sealant. This type of sealant would need to be applied annually and can leave a pasty look to the wood. The Oil based sealant invades the wood and dries from the inside out, allowing your applications to be futher apart and much simpler.

Regardless of which method you choose, it is very important to take care and preserve your wood fence.
