How to Protect Your Vinyl Fence

Published by admin under Maintenance, Vinyl Fence, Yard Fence

Vinyl fences are typically chosen because they are durable, reasonably priced, and low-maintenance. Opposed to its wooden counterpart, Vinyl fences enjoy the attributes of being chip-free and being able to tough out harsh temperature fluctuations. But before you leave your vinyl fence to fend for itself, here are some suggestions for preventing damages:

  • Your fence may be stalwart against all types of conditions, but if the components of the fence aren’t secured properly, they can still be susceptible to cracking if the weather gets brutal enough. Make sure you check the components every so often.
  • Try to avoid doing any backyard activities too close to your fence. BBQ’ing is one thing that should be done from a safe distance; extreme heat from the grill can still possibly melt your vinyl. Using weed-whackers and other lawn-maintenance tools close to the fence can leave ugly marks, or worse.
  • Try to refrain from painting your fence! The UV protectant in it will be covered, and the difficulty and time of doing this task really isn’t worth the effort. Hopefully the color chosen originally will suffice for the life of the fence.

Keep Your (Vinyl) Fence Looking Great

Published by admin under Maintenance, Vinyl Fence

Since we went over how to maintain a beautiful wooden fence last week, we’ll discuss the different techniques you can implement to keep your vinyl fence looking top-notch. Vinyl fences can be a hassle to clean, especially when they have excessive grime, dirt, and algae build-up. Of course, all these things will be easier to remove if you assess the problem sooner than later. If you’ve been neglecting the maintenance, there are some methods you can use to restore your vinyl fence to its original, gleaming luster.

To start, spray down the fence with a hose, applying pressure with your thumb to give it the “pressure-washer” effect. More stubborn dirt and grime can be removed by using a soft-bristle brush. For parts of the fence that are stained, a detergent-water solution can help. Simply mix a little dishwasher detergent in water and wipe the stains with a rag. If the stains are severe enough, you may have to use some bleach. Remember to always wear latex gloves while working with chemicals!
