Aluminum typically comes in three different grades: residential aluminum, light commercial aluminum, and commercial aluminum. It is highly important to understand the advantages and disadvantages of each type, so we have outlined them for you here.

Industry standard (residential). This type of fence is the bare minimum when it comes to industry standards, and is susceptible to multiple problems. The first major problem is that this type of fence is spray painted with an enamel clear coat or thin powder coat. As a result, the fence fades quickly to a nasty gray color. If you decide to go with the industry standard, be sure to check if it is powder coated with UV-ray additives. Secondly, the thinness of the materials often results in bending—an industry standard fence can be bent with the human hand! The third problem is the fact that residential aluminum is often installed and held together in a cheap fashion. We at Paramount Fencing do not recommend this type of fence. We will figure out the cost, but we will not install it.

Light commercial. This type of fence should ideally be the industry standard. It is best for residential homes with moderate-to-high usage. The pickets, which are ¾”

thick, possess greater wall strength than the residential type. Light commercial fences are polyester powder coated, and must meet the American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA) minimum mandates before it can be installed. We offer six standard colors for this type of fence: light bronze, Florida bronze, white, black, green, and beige (see Figure 1).

Commercial grade. A commercial grade fence is typically seen around swimming pools, parking lots, and manufacturing facilities. This fence is not generally installed around residential homes due to their high cost.

If you are looking to stain your fence with a natural color, or maybe even paint it to match the color of your house, follow these steps to revive your fence.

Step One: Using a pump sprayer, spray your fence in small sections with an exterior wood cleaning solution. Scrub the solution into the fence with a stiff-bristled brush to remove mold, dirt, mildew, and excess wood fibers. Rinse with cold water from a garden hose or pressure washer and repeat until the entire fence is completed. Allow the fence to dry.

Step Two: Lay tarps or drop cloths around areas that you do not wish to spill or drip paint, such as walkways, patios, or grass.

Step Three: Pour an exterior paint and finish stripper into a paint tray, and apply to the fence in small sections. Again, scrub these areas with a stiff-bristled brush and rinse with cold water. Repeat for entire fence, and let the fence dry.

Step Four: Pour exterior paint or stain into a clean paint tray. Using a 4-inch nylon-polyester paint brush, paint the horizontal frames using horizontal strokes, and then the vertical posts using vertical brush strokes.  Allow fence to dry.

Step Five: Paint a second coat over the entirety of the fence, and repeat until finished.
